The interim cabinet is set to consider a proposal to hand over electricity tariff and distribution responsibilities to the provinces.

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has approved a summary regarding the matter to be sent to the cabinet where a final decision will be taken.

The summary proposes that the current system of tariff collection and distribution be scrapped entirely. It also proposes that the system of uniform tariffs across the country be ended.

The new system would involve provinces having complete control over electricity matters including deciding rates and subsidies. The ownership of distribution companies will also be handed over to the provinces,

The Hyderabad and Sukkur Electric Supply Companies will be handed over to the Sindh Government, the Quetta supply company will be given over to Balochistan, Peshawar and Tribal area supply companies willbe given over to KP. Similarly Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Multan supply companies will be handed over to Punjab.

The case of the Islamabad Electric Supply Company will be slightly different as it will be owned by both Punjab and federal governments.

Reports said that the federal government is no longer willing to shoulder the burden of the companies due to theft and lack of recoveries.
