BAP’s Senator Sarfraz Bugti has said that the caretaker setup in the centre is likely to be formed with a blend of politicians and technocrats. He denied having any part in the formation of the interim setup.

“It is the prerogative of interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to decide who will be in the setup. I think it will be a blend of politicians and technocrats. However it is premature to say who will be in the setup,” he told Shaukat Piracha on Rubaroo.

Talking about Kakar’s appointment, he said that the interim PM is an intellectually sound and clean man who represents the middle class.

“He understands the matters relating to [Balochistan] insurgency while he also has close relations with all major political parties,” he added.

Bugti called BNP-M chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal’s statement a strange one, saying that he is contradicting his own position as he did not oppose the BAP’s Sadiq Sanjrani’s nomination for Senate chairmanship.

“He was part of the Balochistan government and a coalition partner in the centre. Does he [Mengal] want a [caretaker] prime minister who has homes in Dubai and is from the political elite?” he stated.

PPP’s Qamar Zaman Kaira said that Kakar has a better understanding of Pakistan’s issues and security challenges.

He was of the view that it is the role of the caretaker prime minister is to assist the Election Commission in holding elections.

“Holding elections is the job of ECP. He [Kakar] should not interfere in ECP’s job,” he said.

“We hope that he does everything to carry forward the country’s agreement including IMF [International Monetary Fund] and the CPEC [China-Pakistan Economic Corridor],” Kaira added.

He believed that the elections will be held in January owing to additional three months for the ECP to carry out the delimitation process along with three months, stipulated in the constitution.

PML-N’s Attaullah Tarar said that Nawaz Sharif will lead the election campaign as he is expected to return to Pakistan in September.

“There is no option of going in the election without him [Sharif] as the party thinks that he will lead us in the elections,” he added.

Responding to a question regarding leaders of the PTI leaving the party, he said that it is their choice to join or leave a party.
