Processions for 9 Muharram organised across Pakistan amid heavy security
Processions to mark 9 Muharram were organised across the country on Friday amid strict security arrangements.
Thousands of security officials were on duty and mobile services were partially suspended across many cities.
Karachi
The main procession in Karachi began at Nishtar Park and winded across the city to end at the Imam Bargah Hussainian Iranian.
Mourners in the procession offered Zuhr prayers at Imam Bargah Ali Raza.
MA Jinnah Road was sealed with containers and mobile services were suspended along the routes.
Lahore
The main procession in Lahore began at Pando Street in Islampura and would end at the Imam Bargah Khema-e-Sadat in Old Anarkali on Saturday.
The procession made a brief stop at the Siaj building where mourners offered Zuhr prayers. They then made their way through Neeli Bagh Chowk and Civil Secretariat where Maghrib prayers were offered.
They then reached Khema-e-Sadat where a majlis was held.
Over 2,00 security officials were on duty for the procession and were assisted by rangers. Walkthrough gates were installed at entry points and snipers were posted on high-rise buildings.
Islamabad
The main procession in Islamabad began at the G-6 Imam Bargah and ended at the same spot.
The routes were blocked with barbed wires, tents and containers. A total of 1,685 police officials were on duty. They were assisted by 60 personnel from rangers and 365 personnel from the Federal Constabulary.
Mobile services were also suspended in multiple parts of the city.
Peshawar
The main procession in Peshawar began at the Imam Bargah Hussainian Hall in Saddar at 10am. Another procession began at the Imam Bargah Bibi Sahiba at 3pm.
The processions would be concluded after Fajr prayers on Saturday.
Strict security arrangements have been made throughout the city. Movement of Afghan refugees has been restricted and procession routes are being monitored by CCTV cameras.
Quetta
The mourning procession set out from McConaghey Road and culminated at the Nasirul Aza Imambargah. Heightened security was seen in Quetta.
Strict security arrangements and precautions were taken on the day. Road blockages were placed at various points for routine traffic and mobile phone services were suspended.
Police and FC teams were deployed across the city.
