The standing committee of the National Assembly on Education has directed to issue arrest warrants of vice chancellor of Islamia University Dr Athar Mehboob.

The committee meeting presided by MNA Makhdoom Syed Sami Ul Hassan showed annoyance over the VC’s absence in the meeting in Islamabad on Monday.

The committee chairman said that such events cannot be tolerated in higher educational institutions.

The investigations were initiated after police arrested a staff member of the Islamic University Bahawalpur who was involved in possessing videos and images of students as well as drugs.

Bahawalpur’s Baghdadul Jadid police arrested the university’s Chief Security Officer Syed Ijaz after allegedly discovering drugs in his possession, along with alleged obscene content linked to the university’s female officials and students on his mobile phones.

In the police report, it was revealed that the drug dealer student studying at the university was in contact with Ijaz’s colleagues.

The NA committee summoned District Police Officer of Bahawalpur in the next meeting of the committee, while directing the chairman of Higher Education Commission to monitor all the actions related to the matter.

On which the chairman of HEC said that the VC of the varsity does not listen to anybody.

Inquiry committee formed over alleged drug trade in Islamia University

Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab Mohsin Naqvi formed a 3-member inquiry committee to investigate the alleged drug trade in Bahawalpur vasity.

The committee will work towards identifying those involved in the drug trade and submit a report to the chief minister.

“The incidents of female student exploitation at a university are one of many examples of lack luster mechanisms present for female/male students to protect themselves from blackmailing,” Salman Sufi, the head of PM’s Strategic Reforms Unit, tweeted.

He vowed that no leniency would be shown to the perpetrators and a broader policy shift would be launched.
