Pakistan’s famous ‘Chaiwala’ opens cafe in London
Arshad Khan who became a social media sensation by the name of ‘Chai Wala’ has now opened his own cafe by the same name in London.
The viral picture of Arshad Khan uploaded by Journalist Javeria Ali to Instagram back in October, 2016 with the caption ‘Hot Tea’ brought laurels and praises from rest of the country. Arshad shot to fame, appeared on TV shows, and then vanished for a while at least from the mainstream media.
Perhaps many thought he had disappeared into oblivion but the man has resurfaced in London now.
Cafe ‘Chai Wala’ is situated in East London 229-Alford Lane, where a large number of Indians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis live.
The brand ‘Chaiwala’ has been brought to London by three investors Akbar Durrani, Nadir Durrani and Bahadur Durrani who now plan to open its franchises across the UK, mainland Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.
Pertinently, the billboard outside the caption clearly mentions ‘Cafe Chaiwala Arshad Khan’ so that the customers could recall their memories of the most handsome chaiwala from Pakistan and the media interviews and admiration he received from the people who took every opportunity to take pictures along with him.
Arshad’s cafe has been decorated with boasting cultural Pakistani elements. From truck art and a hand-decorated Vespa, desi paintings on the wall and the interior that is modern and dhabba can be seen displayed wide inside the cafe.
Arshad, who lived a very impoverished life, hailing from Mardan would have never thought in his wildest dreams that he would be the most sought-after person one day. But this is exactly what happened when his picture went viral in 2016.
The focus were his blue-eyes and the casual pose captured when he was pouring the tea while working as a vendor at a local dhaba at Islamabad.
