Man who married 14-year-old girl could be sent to jail, says judge

In a petition regarding the marriage of a man to a14-year-old girl, Justice Ayesha Malik said that the person involved could be sent to jail.

The case was heard by a two member bench headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial. The case states that a 12-year-old girl named Mehwish was abducted and forcefully married and is now the mother of two children.

Justice Ayesha Malik displayed displeasure over the facts of the case and said that the husband could be sent to jail. The chief justice also remarked that the girl was not yet at an age where they she could be married and described her as ‘innocent’.

Justice Ayesha Malik also questioned how the police had managed to close the case’s investigation at the statement of a minor.

During the proceedings, the chief justice called Mehwish to the rostrum and asked where she wanted to go. Mehwish said she wanted to go with her parents.

The court ordered that the Mehwish and her two children must go with her parents and ordered the husband not to bother her unnecessarily.

The chief justice also asked if there was a way for the two families to be reconciled. The husband of the girl replied that Mehwish’s family wanted his sister to marry their son.

The chief justice remarked that mehwish’s family seemed to be seeking revenge.

The court also ordered a medical examination to determine the age of the girl.
