The heatwave-like conditions in most parts of Pakistan was likely to subside from June 25 as the Met Office has predicted pre-monsoon rains with dust thunderstorm in upper and central parts until June 30 with occasional gaps.

“Met Office informed that moist currents are penetrating in upper and central parts of the country from the Arabian Sea and a westerly wave is likely to enter in upper parts of the country on 25th June,” said PMD.

Pakistanis have experienced hot sweltering weather this week, with feel-like temperature going above 40 degrees centigrade.

Under the influence of this weather system:

Rain/wind-thundershower (with few heavy falls) was expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Chitral, Swat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Kurram, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Kohat, Mianwali, Sargodha, Hafizabad, M B Din, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh from June 24 (night) to June 30 with occasional gaps.

Rain/wind-thundershower with isolated heavy falls were also expected in Barkhan, Loralai, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Kalat, Khuzdar, Zhob, Ziarat, Musakhel, D I Khan, Karak, Waziristan, D G khan, Rajanpur, Multan, Bhakkar, Layyah, Kot Addu, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Okara, from 26th to 29th June, while in Sukkur, Jacobabad and Larkana on June 27/28.

Meanwhile, the PMD issued Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for northern areas of Pakistan.

“The temperatures in Gilgit Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to remain 04 to 06 degrees centigrade higher than the normal temperature of this week, followed by a rain-bearing system during the following week,” said the Met Office.

The PMD warned that river inflows would increase and there were high chances of GLOF/flash floods, in the vulnerable glaciated areas of GB and KP.

The Met Office advised district administration and local organisations to remain vigilant.
