Sindh government to establish provincial power regulatory authority
The Sindh Assembly passed the Sindh Regulation of Electric Power Services Bill 2023 on Wednesday, under which the provincial government will establish its own regulatory authority.
The provincial government will establish the Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Sepra).
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority will not be able to issue any licence related to electricity in Sindh without consulting Sepra.
The passing of the bill will empower the provincial government to produce, supply, and distribute electricity from its grid station.
Sepra will overlook all electricity-related matters including that issuing licences for electricity generation, distribution, and supply; and managing matters pertaining to electricity with other provinces.
It will also be empowered to set the electricity prices and tariffs in the province.
The Sindh cabinet approved the establishment of the Sepra on April 23.
