BCCI continues to resist Pakistan’s Asia Cup model as officials meet in IPL final
The Board for Control of Cricket in India continues to oppose Pakistan’s hybrid model for the Asia Cup, as officials met on the sidelines of the Indian Premier League final to decide the fate of the tournament.
The presidents of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board and the Bangladesh Cricket Board reached Ahmedabad on Sunday, where the IPL final between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings would take place.
They were invited by BCCI secretary and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Jay Shah to mull over the upcoming 50-over event.
It is understood that all participating teams except India, have given the green signal to Pakistan Cricket Board’s hybrid model – wherein four preliminary rounds and two super four games will be held in Pakistan with India’s matches and the final taking place in a neutral country.
According to The Indian Express, India have a clear stance to move the tournament away from Pakistan at a neutral venue.
The ACC executive body has 25 members – five Test-playing nations (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan), three with ODI and T20I status, and 17 more with only T20 status.
When asked if the matter could be solved by voting?
“There has to be a middle-of-the-road solution as you can’t put this hybrid model to vote. I mean if there are six nations playing in the event, what is the locus standing of the 19 other nations who won’t play the tournament? On what basis will they vote when they have no stake?” the ACC member told Indian media.
