Afghanistan’s embassy in India has rejected claims by the a new charge d’ affaires being appointed by the Taliban government.

In a Tweet posted on Monday, the Afghan ambassdor to India Farid Mamundzay said that the claims of an individual from the Taliban government taking charge at the embassy were ‘rejected’.

News reports by Tolo had said that Qadir Khan, a trade councillor in the Taliban government had been appointed to run the embassy in India.

However, Mamundzay said that the ‘individual’, meaning Qadir, had been involved in spreading misinformation and running a ‘baseless campaign’ against members of the commission.

He also thanked the Indian government for supporting the embassy and not recognising the Taliban government.

“The Embassy appreciates the consistent position of the Indian government for supporting the interests of the Afghan people, while at the same time not recognizing the Taliban regime in Kabul, as it has been the case with democratic governments around the world,” he wrote.

Mamundzay had told the BBC in 2022 that the embassy he was running was still aligned with the republic that the Taliban had overthrown.

“We are still representing the former republic, our former democracy. We are not taking orders from [the Taliban],” he had said.
