Karachi Electric has asked authorities to renew its license for another 20 years as the tenure of its current agreement draws to an end.

The electric supply company’s current license is set to end on July 20 and it wants to continue operations till 2043.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has invited input on whether K-Electric should be given an extension or not from citizens and all other stake holders in 14 days.

The company has maintained that it is serving 3.4 million clients throughout the city and a contract renewal would be in the ‘interest’ of both the public and the electric power industry.

Formerly known as the Karachi Electric Supply Company, the organisation was rebranded to K-Electric in 2014 as it marked 100 years of operation. The company had already been privatised in 2005 when a company named KES Power took over the majority of its stakes. KE’s website says it is the only company in Pakistan that has control over generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in its area of operation.
