As the government trims fat and goes into austerity drive, it decided to celebrate Pakistan Day in a more austere fashion this year.

The parade is traditionally organised on March 23 in Shakarparian in Islamabad. It involves a march by all armed forces as well as a show of the military’s arsenal. A flypast by the air force’s aircraft is an important part.

Costs for the ceremony are immense so a more simple one will be organised at President House.

The military had announced in June last year that it would cut expenses, including observing a ‘dry day’ on Friday when minimal fuel would be used.

The parade is organised each year to commemorate the passing of the Pakistan Resolution in Lahore in 1940.

Pakistan’s economy is facing historically high inflation coupled with fast depleting forex reserves, as it tries to avoid default.
