The ICC Cricket World Cup is still a few months away, but the teams have already started preparing their final combinations for the mega event.

However, with a regime change in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the Men in Green are far from finalising the players’ pool for the tournament, which is scheduled to be played in India.

Firstly, with the arrival of Najam Sethi, a few old faces have also returned to the offices, that includes Haroon Rasheed – the new chief selector.

With the arrival of former coach Mickey Arthur imminent, fans might see the return of a few old faces in the Pakistan team.

That’s right, the door is open for experienced players like Mohammad Amir, Shoaib Malik, and others.

Rasheed, who will pick the team for the upcoming New Zealand series, believes there is still room for players like Malik and Amir in the current team.

“You have to see which players can fit in your current combination,” he told Cricket Pakistan. “In fact, we also have to see if such a player [Malik] can play any specific role in an important event, which can increase the possibility of Pakistan winning.”

He said that if a young player performs the same role, it can be debatable. “I have kept my position open regarding this topic.”

The 69-year-old, while commenting on Amir, said that it is good to see the pacer playing.

If he [Amir] continues to perform, he will be in contention for selection like other players

“In Amir’s case, I am not sure about his status. I have heard he is thinking of taking his retirement back,” he said. “If he continues to perform, he will be in contention for selection like other players.”

The former Pakistan fast bowler retired from international cricket back in 2020. He famously claimed that he had been “mentally tortured” by the team management before the star cricketer announced his retirement from international cricket.

The pacer was snubbed from the PCB’s list of central contracts prior to his retirement from international cricket.
