It is a wish for every athlete to compete at the Olympics. Though, some sports are far from making it to the mega-event, but it looks like cricket might have a chance to sneak into the biggest sports event.

That’s right, cricket could be included for the 2028 event if all goes according to the International Cricket Council (ICC) plan.

According to ESPNCricinfo, the cricket’s governing body hasn’t given up on including cricket in the Olympics, as it has recommended six-team T20 events for both men and women for the games.

There were reports that the sport failed to make it to the LA Olympics, but the final decision hasn’t been made yet. The decision is expected from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in October this year after the organisers finalise list of new sports by March.

The list then be presented in the IOC’s session in Mumbai in around October this year. If the proposal is accepted, it is likely that the six participating teams would be the top six in the ICC’s men’s and women’s T20 rankings on a cut-off date.

The ICC has not yet finalised a tournament structure - it is still discussing options for this with the LA28 organisers. The decision behind including only six teams each for women and men’s event was to keep it cost efficient.

It is understood that cricket has a wide range of complexities, with squads travelling, support staff, and requiring a certain number of pitches for games along with training pitches for teams to prepare on.

The body has already experience the cost-saving measures during the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last July-August.

Currently, Cricket is competing with eight sports - baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kickboxing, squash and motorsport - to make the 2028 Olympics.

The final decision will be made by the IOC after reviewing all the proposals. Only time will tell, which sport will be making to LA28.
