ECP all set to hold elections in Punjab, KP

Top electoral body recommends holding elections in the first week of April

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said on Thursday that it was all set to hold elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and recommended holding elections in the first week of April.

As per the constitution, the ECP is bound to hold general elections within 90 days of the dissolution of the assembly.

Sources privy to the matter said that the electoral body has decided to release the schedule for the polling in the next two weeks after consultation with Punjab and KP governors. The polls will be held as per the 2017 delimitation, they added.

Sources said that the ECP also recommended holding polls on Sunday to increase voters’ turnout.

The top electoral body will write letters to the governors of Punjab and KP for consultation on finalising the date of holding elections in both provinces. Both governors will decide the final date for general elections.

It is for the first time in history that correspondence will be carried out with the governors for the provincial general elections.

A day earlier, the KP Assembly was dissolved three days after the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly.

The move is a part of PTI chief Imran Khan’s plan to press the government on holding early elections.
