Investigations into the death of Sara Malik, whose dead body washed up on Karachi’s Seaview beach on January 8, have revealed revealed information that might point to the death being a suicide.

Police have tracked down a man who made called the police to Seaview on the day of her death. The caller, identified as Jamal, said that he was sitting on the beach when he saw woman crying near the water. He says that the woman initially walked towards the water, but came back to leave her bag and shoes on the beach. She then entered the water.

He told the police that he called out to the woman but she did not return and no one else responded either. He then called 15 at 3:15pm. The event took place on January 6, her body would be found two days later.

The police initially held the caller under suspicion, but then let him go. Police sources also say that it has still not concluded whether the death was a murder or suicide and all angles are being explored.

However, police sources say that the body washed up near DHA Phase 8 two days later and there is still a gap of information from her initial disappearance.

An Edhi worker told BBC Urdu that the body did not carry the usual traces of a drowning victim. He said that drowned bodies often carry sand in the hair which was not the case with Sara’s body.

Police Surgeon Dr. Samia Saeed also said that the body does not look old and that the victim’s clothes were wet from the front but dry at the back. The left pocket of the maroon hood she was wearing carried more sand than the righ pocket, while the pocket of her jeans had no sand at all. She also said that the there were light scratches on Sara’s face.

Police have also investigated Bisma, an employee of the clinic where Sara worked. Bisma said that Dr. Shan Saleem who owned the clinic would hire young women and lure them into illicit relationships. However, police is still investigating if Bisma’s claims are true.

The CCTV footage of Sara’s last hours in the clinic has been deleted. Sara’s phone, which she apparently left in the clinic, was also formatted by the alleged perpatrators. The phone has been sent for forensice analysis.
