Imran Khan gains time in Toshakhana, contempt petitions
With a flurry of court cases against him and investigations in the assassination attempt on-going, here are all updates about official proceedings related to Imran Khan today.
Toshakhana Case
PML-N asked the court to be granted a week’s time to prepare their arguments in the Toshakhana reference on Tuesday.
Imran Khan has already been disqualified in the reference by the election commission. However, he had approached the IHC to appeal the decision and prevent the commission from further action.
The counsel for the election commission said that proceedings to remove Imran Khan as PTI’s chairman have been initiated. The lawyer for PML-N’s Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha asked the court for time to prepare his arguments.
Appearing for PTI, Ali Zafar said that the Imran Khan had been improperly disqualified based on old tax returns from 2018 and 2019.
Aaj News’ Asif Naveed said that the court said that a decision will be reached in two to three weeks.
Contempt of Election Commission
Election Commission of Pakistan asked PTI’s lawyers to ensure that Imran Khan, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry appear at the next hearing of contempt proceedings against them on Tuesday.
Contempt notices have been issued to the three leaders for using inappropriate language in criticism of the chief election commissioner. Imran Khan has repeatedly called for the CEC’s resignation.
PTI maintained that Imran Khan could not appear in person as he is recovering from injuries sustained an assassination attempt. Fawad Chaudhry could not appear due to a ‘flu’, reported Aaj News’ Rehan Sheikh.
PTI has maintained that the commission cannot initiate contempt proceedings as it is not a tribunal. However, the commission told the PTI on Tuesday that the higher courts will give them relief if the proceedings are illegal.
“The contempt happened against the institution not just one person,” member Sindh said.
Assassination attempt investigation
Suspects arrested in connection with the assassination attempt on Imran Khan’s life will undergo polygraph tests, authorities decided on Tuesday.
Aaj News’ Ateeq Malik reported that so far the authorities had been unable to get any important information out of Naveed, the main accused who has been in custody since the day of the shooting.
Imran Khan’s long march came under fire in Wazirabad on November 3. The PTI chief was shot in the leg and shifted to Lahore, where he conitnues to recover.
Polygraph tests, also commonly known as lie detector tests, are an analysis of how truthful people aunder interrogation are based on body indicators such as blood pressure and pulse. Any dramatic change indicates that a person is not telling the truth.
