PTI comes up with ‘new campaign’ for early elections
LAHORE: The PTI has decided to start a new campaign for early elections, sources said amid “informal talks” with the government. Imran Khan has shown a willingness to negotiate but with conditions that the coalition government does not support.
‘Election Karao, Mulk Bachao’ (conduct election, save country) would start from tomorrow (December 7) and continue till December 17. The decision was taken during a meeting presided over by the party chief in Lahore where PTI lawmakers and ticket holders were in attendance.
What will happen in this rally?
- Eleven public gathering events will be held in Lahore
- Public issues, including inflation, shortage of gas, and economic situation will be highlighted in such rallies
- Hammad Azhar will lead the rally on Dec 7 from Lahore’s Gulshan Ravi
Sources said that it was part of the former ruling party’s strategy to give the tough time to the government. The PTI has given the coalition government an ultimatum to either “sit and talk and give a date for the general elections” or “we will dissolve the assemblies”.
But, Imran has also admitted that his offer to the Pakistan Democratic Movement was “misread”.
“We want to see elections in March, if they want to negotiate on it fine, if not we will proceed with dissolving assemblies,” Imran said in an interview with Bol News last week. To a query, he said that they would dissolve the assemblies this month if the demands were not met.
The coalition government has maintained that dialogue could only be unconditional, saying that such developments could not happen in an environment where a leader gives “threats and abuse”.
But, talks have started between the PDM and the PTI.
“An informal connection is established with the coalition government to discuss the announcement of general elections in the country,” PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry told reporters following his meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi and his son, Moonis Elahi, both PML-Q leaders, outside the residence of former premier Imran Khan at Zaman Park on Monday.
Fawad said that they were making efforts to normalise their relations with the army and judiciary. However, he accused some elements of the coalition government of making efforts to exacerbate the differences.
