Manchester United have announced the termination of Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract effective immediately following the interview saga.

United issued a 67-word statement on Tuesday stating that both parties “mutually agreed” on the decision.

“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford,” said a Manchester United statement.

“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch,” further in the statement.

Ronaldo’s position at Old Trafford has been under intense scrutiny following the interview with Piers Morgan for TalkTV.

During the chat, which was aired over two parts, the 37-year-old forward claimed he had been “betrayed” by United and manager Erik ten Hag, who he says had made attempts to force him out of the club.

“Yes, not only the coach (Ten Hag) but another two or three guys around the club. I felt betrayed,” he said. “Yes I feel betrayed, and I felt some people don’t want me here, not just this year, but last year too.”

Ronaldo rejoined United from Juventus for a second spell at Old Trafford in August 2021 on a two-year deal, returning to the club where he won eight major trophies from 2003-2009.

The iconic striker scored 145 goals and made 346 appearances during his two stints with the English Premier League club.
