WAZIRABAD: PML-N leader Imtiaz Bagri, who had threatened to attack PTI chief Imran Khan, was released by the police on Friday.

The police arrested Bagri for being a threat to peace. His arrest had come after his incendiary speech at the party’s convention. Videos of the speech went viral on social media.

PTI chief Imran Khan was shot at during the party’s Azadi March in Wazirabad on November 3 by a man standing near his container. One man and several others were injured in the attack. Imran, who described it as an assassination attempt, got wounds on the leg. Bullets had chipped part of his tibia.

Bagri is considered to be a close relative of former inspector general of motorway Zulfiqar Cheema.

The PML-N had condemned the party leader’s arrest, saying that the police action was “unjustified, illegal and political revenge”.

“Imran Khan is looking for excuses for conflict and civil war,” Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Narcotics Control Attaullah Tarar said in a statement shared by the PML-N on Twitter.

He alleged that it was an attempt to intimidate and threaten PML-N workers. “Political revenge tactics are the hallmark of PTI, [we] know how to fight,” Tarar said, adding that the party was standing with their leader.

Bagri had addressed the party event in Punjabi.

Earlier, another PML-N leader Rai Qamar gave death threats to Imran.

Qamar was arrested after his video went viral and Punjab Chief Minister Pervez Elahi ordered the police to take action. The first information report of the incident was registered on November 5 at the Hafizabad police station under Section 7 (punishment for acts of terrorism) of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, and sections 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
