Khyber Pakhtunkhwa splits South Waziristan into two districts
The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa confirmed the division of South Waziristan into two districts on Thursday.
According to the notification issued in this regard, the two newly-created districts have been named Upper Waziristan and Lower Waziristan.
The notification said that the Upper Waziristan will consist of Shawal, Ladha, Makin, Tayyarzai, Sarokai, and Shakaee with Speenkai Rakhzai as its headquarters.
Meanwhile, Lower Waziristan will comrpise the following areas: Wanna, Shakai, Loi Khwla and Barmali with Wana as its headquarters.
It stated that Upper Waziristan has two sub-divisions including Ladha and Sarokai while Lower Waziristan has one sub-division, Wana.
Earlier, in September 2021, the then prime minister Imran Khan had announced bifurcation of South Waziristan into two districts to improve administrative affairs in the volatile merged tribal districts.
Following the announcement, the provincial cabinet, in April 2022, approved dividing South Waziristan tribal district into Upper and Lower South Waziristan districts.
