The death toll from the devastating floods rose to 1,162 with another 36 deaths as heavy flooding triggered by monsoon rains continue to lash Pakistan, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in its report on Wednesday.

The NDMA reported that 36 people died during the last 24 hours with 19 in Punjab, nine in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, five in Balochistan and three in Sindh.

The NDMA said that 1,162 people, including 384 children and 231 women, have died so far due to flooding since mid-June. The numbers are expected to further increase in the coming days, it added.

According to the the country’s primary disaster response agency, more than 3,500 people have been injured due to rains and floods, 243 bridges have been damaged, while 3,500 kilometers of roads have been affected by flash flooding.

More than 33 million people have been affected by the floods, with at least 72 districts being declared disaster areas.

Hundreds of thousands of people are currently living without food, clean water, shelter and basic medicines.

The floods inundated agricultural land, destroying crops of cotton, rice, dates, tomatoes, chilli peppers and other vegetables.

In addition, more than 730,000 cattle have also been killed so far by the raging floods.

The water has damaged more than a million houses, over 5,000 kilometers of roads, and 243 bridges, according to the latest reports.

Food and vegetable prices in the country have skyrocketed after crops on thousands of hectares of land were lost in recent weeks.

Balochistan

Five more persons died in flash floods and monsoon rains in Balochistan during the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 254, the provincial Desaster Management Authority said in its report on Wednesday.

The report said that 121 men, 59 women and 73 children died due to flooding since mid-June, while 81 people were injured.

It said that 145,936 cattle were killed and 61,718 houses were damaged due to the rains and floods in the province out of which 17,608 houses were completely destroyed while 44,110 houses were partially damaged.

The report said that over 1,000 km of roads and 18 bridges were damaged due to the floods.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Nine more people have lost their lives due to rains and flood-related incidents during the past 24 hours taking the death toll 264, the PDMA reported.

The report said that 36 women and 106 children have been killed since mid-June.

327 people have been injured during the same period and shifted to local hospitals for treatment by the rescue workers, the report added.

The report said that 156 schools and other educational institutions were damaged in KPK including in merged districts.

The calamity also badly hit the livestock sector as 9,411 cattle reportedly died in the province.

The most affected calamity-hit districts of the province were Dera Ismail Khan, Swat, Karak, Lakki Marwat, Tank and Kohistan where floods and rains inflicted heavy losses on human lives, houses and standing crops.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 159 relief camps have been established of which 77 were set up only in Nowshera district where affectees were being provided food and other necessary items.

In DI Khan 25,000 people have been accommodated in 11 big relief camps where all basic needs of life were being provided to them.

In Charsadda, the district administration has set up 17 relief camps while in Dir Upper, seven camps and in Malakand and Mansehra each two camps have been established.
