More torrential rains expected in Karachi from July 14 to 18: Met dept

Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in the city, killed at least nine people in the last four days, inundated roads, streets

KARACHI: Karachi will receive more torrential rains from July 14 under the new weather system, the Pakistan Meteorological Department issued a new rain alert on Monday.

A new monsoon spell is underway in Karachi’s South and it will enter from India’s Rajhistan in the city, chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz said.

“Under the new system, torrential rains are expected in the city from July 14 to 18,” he said.

The torrential rains have wreaked havoc in Karachi on Eidul Azha with urban flooding and killing at least nine people in different incidents across the city.

At least six people died of the electrocution. Two people drowned in Malir river and Gadap river and a labour died as the wall collapsed in Korangi Industrial area.

#Karachi is trending on Twitter where users shared videos of inundated streets and roads of almost all areas of Karachi. The videos also showed that people and their vehicles were stuck on roads.

However, Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab said: “The quantum of rain has been 126 mm in certain areas of Karachi in three hours. The Naalaas and drains are taking water but the process is slow.”

The chief minister and his team were in the field and the Sindh government was “trying our best to address the situation,” he added.

Later, he tweeted: “Naala crossing the city centre and Arts Council area is flowing on full capacity. Once the water level here comes down, the situation of I I Chundrigar Road and MA Jinnah Road will improve.”

As the urban flooding situation has worsened in Karachi, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted he had offered to extend every possible support to Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah as he spoke to him on Monday.

The PMD issued the amount of rainfall in different areas of Karachi from 8am to 5pm on Monday (today).
