Dua Zehra’s father has gone to court to try to stop her from giving interviews to the media in the latest development of what has become the most high-profile child marriage case in Sindh so far this year.

The Supreme Court has granted Dua Zehra’s father’s appeal to hear the case at the Karachi Registry on June 23.

Mehdi Kazmi had challenged in the Supreme Court the Sindh High Court’s June 8 decision allowing her to live with whomever she wanted. The decision was based on her statement and a ‘medical test’, which found her to be 17 years old.

The text of the petition states that according to Nadra’s records and educational credentials, Dua Zahra is 14 years old.

Her father’s legal team filed a second interim relief application to ensure that Dua is not allowed to give interviews as she is a minor. If approved the application will also ensure that Dua does not leave the country.

The development comes after Dua was interviewed by a local YouTube host. The teenage girl told Youtuber Zunera Mahum in the interview that her father, Mehdi Kazmi, wanted to marry her off to his nephew Zainul Abideen in order to resolve a dispute over a plot he had with his brother.

Dua said that her father had threatened her that he would kill her if she tried to marry Zaheer.

Zaheer was asked about his qualifications and source of income, to which he said he “deals in the sale and purchase of mobile phones and has recently done the FSC from pre-medical.” He earns up to Rs70,000 to Rs90,000 per month by dealing in mobile phones.
