LONDON: Former cricketer Zaheer Abbas, also known as ‘Asian Bradman’, has been shifted to an Intensive Care Unit in a London hospital after he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Abbas had tested positive for Covid-19 while staying in Dubai on his way to England’s capital. After reaching London, he complained of kidney pain and was then admitted to the hospital where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He was then shifted to the ICU.

Seventy-four years old ex-cricketer played 78 test matches and 62 one-day matches during his career from 1969 to 1985. Among these 164 were first-class matches.

After retirement, Abbas served as match referee, team manager and batting coach. He was also the last president of the ICC from 2015 to 2016 before the post was abolished. Abbas was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in August 2020.

Earlier, this year the Pakistan Cricket Board inducted him into the PCB Hall of Fame for his contribution to the game as the right-handed batter scored 5,062 runs in 78 Test matches at an average of 44.79 with 12 centuries.
