KARACHI: Police on Saturday said they have the CCTV footage of the acid attack on a lady police constable near Sohrab Goth police station a day earlier.

The CCTV footage shows the policewoman riding pillion on a motorcycle with her brother. After the attack, the female officer gets off the motorcycle and tries to wipe the liquid that was thrown at her face. Contrary to her statement the footage shows only one attacker who did not make any attempt to deprive the two of their valuables as stated by the complainants in the first information report (FIR).

A day earlier, it was reported that the lady constable and her brother were the victims of an acid attack.

“My sister has seven to eight per cent burns. My brother has 12-13 per cent burns,” said Irfan, another sibling, while speaking to Aaj Digital. “My sister’s face and arms are badly damaged and she is in critical condition.”

A case has been registered at Sachal police station. In her statement, the lady constable, 25, said that the two attackers were first robbed them and then threw a corrosive substance at them that led them badly burnt.

The same has been stated in the FIR by her brother Rizwan, 22, who was accompanying her. It has been filed under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including 336B (hurt by corrosive substance), 324 (attempt to murder), 382 (theft after preparation made for causing death, hurt or restraint in order to the committing of the theft), 109 (punishment of abetment if the act abetted committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment), 34 (common intention) and Anti-Terrorism Act 7 (acts of terrorism).

The robbery cannot be seen on the CCTV footage that shows the acid attack. Following the attack, the lady constable can be seen gettig off the vehicle. At the same time, the attacker also went closer to the siblings to inspect their condition before escaping.

In her statement, the lady constable mentioned that the attackers snatched her purchase. When she turned towards them, acid was flung in her face. CCTV footage cannot corroborate her statement.

According to Irfan, the victims’ brother, the family does not suspect anyone. “But no one throws acid in a robbery,” he added, saying that the family was concerned regarding their safety.
