KARACHI: A Karachi court on Monday sent to prison the suspects in the gang rape of a woman who was travelling from Muzaffargarh to Karachi on the Bahauddin Zakaria Express.

The court ordered the investigation officer (IO) to submit the challan at the next hearing.

The woman had identified two accused in the court.

In an earlier hearing, the IO informed the court that the suspects had filmed the victim during the gang rape. He told the court, as reported by local media, that efforts were underway to retrieve the videos from the suspects’ phones.

Last month the woman, a mother of two, was raped onboard the Karachi-bound Bahauddin Zakaria Express train while travelling to Karachi from Punjab’s Muzaffargarh.

She had gone to Muzaffargarh to meet her children on May 26, as her husband had divorced her more than a month ago.

Zahid along with another person allegedly took her to an air conditioned compartment of a bogie where they raped her and fled from the scene.

After initial reluctance, the woman decided to lodge a case against the suspects and went to the police.

The Pakistan Railways had condemned the attack and said the rape was not initially reported to the police station. It was published in an Urdu daily newspaper after which action was taken.
