Shehzad Roy, singer and social activist, recently joined forces with superstar Sajal Aly for a one-of-a-kind advertisement video titled Tum Ho To, which was launched on June 4th.

The music video

The video was created for Systems Limited, in collaboration with the Ali Institute of Education. Award-winning actor and director Faisal Qureshi is behind the very modern visuals of the music video. It focuses on defying gender norms and promotes female empowerment.

The music video focuses on showing the untapped reserve of talent that are Pakistani women and discusses the age-old argument of a woman’s right to work.

Focused on a young, modern couple, the video depicts all different kinds of issues and struggles that women go through in our country when they are told they don’t “need to work”.

A scene from dinner shows how Sajal feels inadequate, while in another she witnesses other women take control of their dreams and aspirations while she can’t.

It also shows the effects on their marriage, when the same husband is fighting for the right of other women to work and when he eventually loses his job.

This is where Sajal puts her foot down and the video highlights the never-ending argument of ‘wants’ verses ‘needs’.

“Tumharay khayal main mujhe kaam karnae ki zaroorat nai hai, laikan bat sirif zaroorat ki nai hai.” (You think there is no need for me to work, but it’s not about simply needing it, but wanting it)

We have to admit that after watching the video, we believe it to be some of Shehzad Roy and Sajal Aly’s best work. From the song’s melody and lyrics to the video’s deep significance, we were blown away by how effective they were in bringing such an important subject to light.

The video itself was crisp and the use of light to depict various moods and situations was spot on. We give it an eight out of ten.
