Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has called for the formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan for constitutional violations.

Addressing the floor during the National Assembly session on Thursday, the foreign minister asked the parliament, institutions and the judiciary to play their role in the matter.

Bilawal stated that a minister of the PTI government had threatened him before the no-confidence motion against the former premier was passed. I was told to accept immediate elections or face martial law in the country, he said.

“A high-level parliamentary committee must be formed to probe the events like April 3,” Bilawal said.

On April 3 former deputy speaker Qasim Suri had termed the no-trust motion against Imran Khan “unconstitutional” and dismissed it. Following the dismissal of the no-trust motion, the then-prime minister advised President Arif Alvi to dissolve the assemblies and he followed the suit.

Supreme Court on April 7, declared the government’s decision to dissolve the assembly and Suri’s ruling against the constitution after the then joint opposition filed a plea in the apex court seeking nullification of the government move.

Bilawal said that attacks on the Constitution and the parliament should be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.

He said that acts to undermine the Constitution had taken place in the past as well and the parliament kept quiet on it. “Therefore, such events should be investigated.”

Bilawal emphasised that PPP was never in favour of political engineering and noted that it was the policy of his party to hold elections after electoral reforms. “PPP is not an undemocratic party which is against polls,” he added.

“We are a democratic force and demand transparent elections. We had earlier demanded that electoral reforms should take place first. This is PPP’s clear stance,” Bilawal said.

“The former prime minister thinks he is a ‘sacred cow’ as he is currently speaking against the constitution, national security, and economic stability,” the foreign minister said about Imran Khan.

“Wherever we see, there is a crisis and the situation in Pakistan is at a crisis point,” Bilawal said.

The minister said that Imran Khan should be asked about the performance of his government during their tenure. “He [Imran] should be questioned about the economy, and how his ego damaged Pakistan internationally,” he added.

Kashmir delimitation

During today’s session, the House unanimously passed a resolution denouncing the latest Indian attempt for demographic engineering in occupied Jammu and Kashmir through a so-called “delimitation commission”.

The foreign minister had moved the resolution, which stated that India aims to artificially alter the electoral strength of the Muslim majority in Indian Illegaly Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
