Shehbaz urges speaker to end debate, conduct vote on no-trust motion
ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, who is also the head of the PML-N, has urged the NA speaker to put an end to debate on the motion of no-confidence against the prime minister and to conduct voting without further delay.
Addressing the house for the second time during the NA session on Saturday, Sharif observed that speeches had been continuing for the past several hours while voting on the motion - as ordered by the Supreme Court - was not taking place. "You are making us listen to nonsense. End this debate and conduct the vote."
The PML-N chief further stated that PM Imran has ruined the country. "Poverty and inflation have reached new heights. People have lost their sleep due to billions of corruption in scandals related to sugar, wheat and LNG."
Responding to the speaker's earlier comment regarding debate on the international conspiracy, Sharif replied that discussing the alleged conspiracy would be in violation of the top court's order.
"If we want to talk about conspiracies, a lot can be discussed," he said, while accusing the PTI of sabotaging the visit of the Chinese president in 2014 through its protest. "The Chinese president was unable to visit due to it."
Sharif urged the speaker to follow the agenda instead of deviating from the issue at hand.
While addressing the house earlier in the day, Sharif cited the Supreme Court ruling of April 7 to overturn the NA deputy speaker's decision not to hold voting on the no-confidene vote and the ensuing dissolution of the NA by the president on PM Imran's advice while instructing the speaker to conduct the session on the vote on Saturday.
"Today, history will be made in the parliament," he said while lauding the apex court for overturning the deputy speaker's "unconstitutional" action.
"By not resorting to the doctrine of necessity, the Supreme Court has buried it forever," he continued while urging the speaker to also abide by the top court's order and hold the vote without further delay.
As per Aaj News, at least 176 members supporting the opposition are present in the NA while around 100 lawmakers of the ruling PTI are in attendance.
During his speech, Shehbaz urged the NA speaker to abide by the top court's order. "Forget about whatever transpired in the past. Today, you should stand for the Constitution," he said while urging the speaker to act as the custodian of the house.
"Don't follow the instructions of the slected prime minsiter," he continued.
Speaking after Shehbaz Sharif's address, Speaker Asad Qaiser said that he will abide by the top court's ruling. "We should also discuss the international conspiracy [to oust Imran Khan]," he added.
