Karachi varsity suspends student over viral video, 'LGBTQ-themed event'
The Institute of Business Administration (IBA), the country's premier business school, has suspended one student over involvement in an on-campus event the video of which has been shared widely on social media.
The decision to suspend the student and bar another student from entering the university premises for a year was taken following Executive Director Akbar Zaidi's instructions to the Student Conduct Committee to investigate the matter related to the viral video.
In the video, believed to be recorded and shared by one of the students present on campus, people can be seen dancing around a tree suggestively to songs that are believed to be queer friendly.
"Following the findings of the committee, one of the students involved in the matter has been suspended for one year and the second student has been barred from entering the IBA premises revoking campus access, revoking hostel access, and access to any other institutional facilities and services for the rest of the academic year," said the statement according to Geo News.
It added that the unversity has unequivally condemned the activity which was "against the norms, ethics, rules and regulations of the institution" while putting all future social and musical events to be held at university premises on hold.
Meanwhile, a faculty member of the IBA, speaking the condition of anonymity, said that the university administration was unaware of the event that was portrayed ''as a rave or a party with a homosexual agenda" on social media and by certain sections of the media.
The video sparked outrage not only on social media but among the university's alumni as well, with many writing to the university to register their protest.
Transgender activist Dr Moiz Awan, who can also be seen in the video, told a local news channel that he was at the university as a guest speaker for a talk on transgender rights.
"It was after this talk that students took part in an impromptu gathering on campus," said the faculty member.
