President Alvi, PTI leadership acquitted in Parliament House attack case
ISLAMABAD. An Islamabad anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday acquitted President Dr Arif Alvi, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and the senior leaders of the ruling PTI in the 2014 Parliament House attack case.
The court had already acquitted Prime Minister Imran Khan in October 2020. In its detailed verdict, the court cited "insufficient and inconclusive proof of guilt" to dispose off the case against the premier.
Earlier this month, President Alvi filed an appeal in the anti-terrorism court that sought an end to presidential immunity in the PTV and Parliament House attack cases. Alvi had appeared before the court with his counsel Babar Awan – the prime minister’s adviser on parliamentary affairs.
Judge Mohammad Ali Warraich announced the verdict on President Alvi's application as well as acquittal petitions filed by the PTI leaders.
Other PTI leaders who were acquitted today include Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar, Minister for Defence Pervez Khattak, Senator Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Labour and Culture Minister Shaukat Ali Yousafzai as well as estranged party leaders Jahangir Tareen and Aleem Khan.
On Aug 31, 2014, workers of the PTI and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers marched towards the Parliament House and the Prime Minister House. After clashing with police on Constitutional Avenue, the protesters attacked the PTV premises and briefly took control of the building.
