Former president Rafiq Tarar passes away at 92

Former president Muhammad Rafiq Tarar passed away on Monday in Lahore after a prolonged illness. He was 92.

His grandson and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Attaullah Tarar took to Twitter to confirm his death.

Tarar was born on November 2, 1929. He served as the 28th Chief Justice of Lahore High Court from 1989 to 1991 and was then appointed a senior judge at the Supreme Court where he served from 1991 to 1994.

Later he joined politics and elected as a Senator from Punjab in 1997. Tarar was elected as the ninth president of the country from January 1998 until his resignation in June 2001.

Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif offered his condolences and prayed for his higher ranks in hereafter, saying Tarar had "honestly guided them".

President Dr Arif Alvi also expressed sorrow on Tarar's death.
