A large majority of Pakistanis support their government’s efforts to mediate a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and are hopeful the talks could lead to lasting peace, according to a new survey by Gallup Pakistan.

The snap poll, conducted on April 8 and 9, found that 93% of respondents backed Pakistan’s role in seeking a ceasefire in the international conflict, with 72% expressing strong support. Opposition to the effort was described as minimal.

The survey also indicated that 80% of Pakistanis are hopeful that ongoing US-Iran talks could result in a durable peace, with 44% saying they are very optimistic about such an outcome.

Public awareness of the government’s diplomatic efforts was relatively high, with 82% of respondents saying they were aware of the initiative. Of those, 46% said they had sufficient information, while 14% reported being unaware.

Support for a broader mediation role was also evident. According to the survey, 88% of respondents believe Pakistan should play an active role in mediating international conflicts, compared with 5% who said it should remain neutral and 3% who favoured siding with one of the parties.

The findings come ahead of key diplomatic engagements related to the conflict.

The survey was conducted on a representative sample of around 1,000 adults through telephone interviews using random digit dialling. Gallup Pakistan said the margin of error was between 2% and 3%.
