Initial investigation reveals no evidence against Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan
A special investigation team from India's Narcotics Control Bureau, in line with Bombay High Court's ruling, said on Wednesday it did not find evidence to connect Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan’s son, Aryan to a larger drug conspiracy or to international drug trafficking, reported Hindustan Times.
The special investigation was launched after a key NCB witness alleged that Mumbai zonal chief Sameer Wankhede was targeting the Khans in an Indian Rs25 crore extortion racket. He also alleged that he was forced to sign blank sheets of paper, which prompted the anti-drug agency to launch an investigation.
The investigation soon unearthed irregularities in the raid conducted on the yacht that Aryan was arrested from last year in October, which prompted probes into the irregularities separately.
The initial findings revealed that Aryan was never in possession of any drugs, so taking away his phone was not necessary in the first place, while even after inspection of his Whatsapp messages there was no evidence to tie him to any criminal syndicate or any conspiracy to smuggle or sell drugs.
The raid was not recorded on video although required as per the NCB manual, while all the drugs recovered from multiple accused were also put down as a single recovery.
During the special investigation, it was also discovered that Aryan had never asked his friend, Arbaaz Merchant to bring drugs aboard the cruise ship, a fact that Merchant also corroborated.
Meanwhile the Maharashtra government is mulling launching an investigation into the legitimacy of the arrest after initial reports of the investigation have surfaced.
The NCB has asked people to show restrain, saying it is premature to say there is no evidence against Aryan as the team has not concluded its report and it maybe a few months before it is officially released. Legal opinion will also be sought on charging Aryan with consumption charges while he was not carrying any drugs.
Aryan's case has drawn a great deal of media interest since the young man was arrested last year. Many Bollywood celebrities extended their support to Shah Rukh and Aryan.
Twitter seems divided, with some alleging this is part of the recent push against Muslims in India and asking for compensation for the alleged torture Aryan went through by being in jail
But not everyone was supportive of Aryan as some alleged that the initial reports from the probe were false.
