Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Umar Amin Gandapur has won the city mayor seat of Dera Ismail Khan in the re-polling for local government elections in 13 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the unofficial results available with Aaj News.

Umar, who is the brother of Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Ali Amin Gandapur, secured 63,753 votes against 38,891 of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s leader Kafeel Ahmed.

However, the preliminary results showed that the JUI-F looked dominant in the re-polling to positions of mayor/chairman of tehsil councils as well. The Fazl-led JUI faction’s candidate won the coveted seat of Peshawar mayor. JUI-F’s Zubair Ali was elected Peshawar city mayor with 63,358 votes, followed by PTI’s Muhammad Rizwan Bangash, who got 51,395 votes. Pakistan Peoples Party candidate came third in the run to the provincial capital’s mayor seat, with 46,198 votes.

The polling began at 8am and continued until 5pm without any pause on Sunday. According to the provincial election commission, re-voting was being conducted in the 13 provincial districts, which include Peshawar, Nowshera, Khyber, Mohmand, Mardan, Kohat, Karak, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Buner, Bajaur, and Charsadda.

Re-polling was held on seats where elections were terminated either because of the poor law and order situation on the polling day or death of the contesting candidates during the first phase of local bodies polls, as per Radio Pakistan.

Planning Minister Asad Umar took to Twitter to congratulate the party candidate and criticised JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman over claims to topple the government. “First in general elections and now in the local government election, the JUI-F has faced defeat at its home against PTI,” he added.

Moreover, JUI-F’s Mamoor Khan Wazir won the chairman seat in the Baka Khel election in Bannu Tehsil. PTI’s Israr Khan in Bannu Tehsil’s Domel and JUI-F’s Mohammad Kafeel were elected as chairman in the respective seats.

Furthermore, JUI-F’s Saeed Badshah defeat Jamaat-e-Islami’s candidate Haroon Rashid in Bajaur’s Tehsil Khar and PTI’s Kamran Razzaq defeated PPP’s Jamshed Khan in Nowshera’s Tehsil Jahangira.
