"Liar" or "Legend": Social media divided over PM Imran's interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria

Social media is flooded with varying responses to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s appearance on Indian-American journalist Fareed Zakaria’s CNN show on Sunday.

While some criticized the premier for his statements on the genocide of Uyghur Muslims in China, others praised him for doing a “commendable job” answering Zakaria’s questions on “sensitive issues.”

Pakistanis wondered if any other leaders have ever faced journalists like Zakaria.

PML-N leader Hina Parvez Butt posted a picture of herself, reading a book authored by Zakaria, in what seems like a subtle dig at the PM.

But social media users didn’t let her get away with it. Replying to her tweet, one user said, “What a leader we have unlike the previous parchi leader.”

When questioned about the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in China, the PM said Pakistan’s ambassador to China has visited the Xinjiang province and reported that the situation isn’t as “portrayed by western media.”

He said it was not fair to compare China’s Xinjiang situation with that of Kashmir in India. “Occupied Kashmir is a disputed territory between Pakistan and India and India is ruled by an RSS ideology," he said. "Until the Kashmir issue is resolved, the fear of war between the two nuclear powers will remain intact."

This statement irked many Indians who later took to social media and called out the PM for having a “bias” against India.

Some people even accused PM Khan for “lying” about the Kashmir issue.

Many users lambasted PM Khan for not clearly condemning China for the Xinjiang issue.

At one point during the interview, the premiere claimed to know India better than any other Pakistani did. “I am probably one of those Pakistani who knows India and understands India much more than the rest of my own countrymen, probably all over the world.”
