The Federal Investigation Agency' Cyber Crime wing on Tuesday arrested two men and registered a case against them for blackmailing, harassment, extortion and sharing obscene material of young women and men without their consent.

In a complaint reproduced in the first information report (FIR), a female victim — a student of University of Karachi — said she was receiving threats from someone who had made “an inappropriate video of me without my consent”.

The accused was threatening the woman and demanding she pay Rs15,000 or else he would upload the video on YouTube and the university’s social media page.

Following the woman's complaint, the FIA conducted the inquiry of the incident and seized digital equipment from the accused and sent them for forensic analysis.

The investigation revealed the accused were involved in blackmailing and harassing at least 14 male and female students at Karachi University.

The FIA in its statement said the accused persons — Fazal Dad and Adnan Ali — are rickshaw driver and driver of a professor of the university, respectively, who made videos the students without their consent. They did this while they were sitting at different areas in university in seclusion or sitting in their vehicles.

The case was registered against Dad and Ali under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 (Peca) Section 16 (unauthorized use of identity information) , Section 20 (offences against dignity of a natural person), Section 21 (offences against dignity of a natural person or minor) and Section 24 (cyber stalking) and Pakistan Penal Code Section 109 (punishment for abetment) and Section 383 (extortion).

Twelve victims of the harassment cases refused to come forward due to privacy concerns, read the FIA statement, adding further investigation was underway to check involvement of any other employee of the university.
