U-19 Asia Cup: Pakistan beat arch-rival India to reach semis
Pakistan on Saturday beat arch-rival India in a thriller contest in their group ‘A’ match of the U-19 Asia Cup in Dubai, sealing a spot in the semi-finals of the event, Aaj News reported.
Fast bowler Zeeshan Zemeer’s five-wicket haul and a fine 81-run knock by Mohammad Shehzad were crucial in the Green Shirts victory over the Men in Blue.
Pakistan achieved their target of 238 off the very last ball when Ahmed Khan drove Indian pacer Ravi Kumar for a boundary. The PCB also shared the video of the victory shot.
Earlier, right-handed Shehzad played an important knock of 105 balls while hitting five sixes and four fours.
At 230-7, Pakistan required eight runs for victory in the final over. On the first ball of the over, Pakistan lost Zeeshan for a nought to Ravi. But Ahmed with Ali Asfand survived the tense moments and achieved the target on the last ball.
Muhammad Shehzad, the player from Dera Ghazi Khan born, was declared player of the match for his innings of 81. "This was a huge game against India and it was my dream to put in a contribution that would help Pakistan win, and I did that," Shehzad told reporters.
For India, Raj Bawa picked four for 56.
Earlier, after being put in to bat, India were reeling at 41 for four in the eighth over courtesy of Zeeshan Zameer’s three wickets upfront. The right-arm pacer accounted for Angkrish Raghuvanshi (nought off four), Shaik Rasheed (six off six) and captain Yash Dhull (first ball duck). He went on to take two more wickets in the last spell of his bowling to end up with match figures of five for 60 from 10 overs. Right-arm fast Awais Ali, who was awarded player of the match in the last game against Afghanistan took two wickets for 43.
India were bowled out for 237 in the 49th over. Aaradhya Yadav top-scored with 50 off 83. Harnoor Singh (46, six fours, 59b), Rajvardhan Hangargekar (33, five fours, one six, 20b) and Kaushal Tambe (32, four fours, 38b) were other contributors with the bat.
Pakistan will face UAE in their next match on Monday at the ICC Cricket Academy Ground in Dubai.
Reacting to the victory, former cricketers praised the young guns and appreciated their spirit in the tense game against India.
"Congrats young guns. Played a tremendous game and held your nerve to beat India," PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja said in a tweet.
Skipper Babar Azam also took to Twitter to express his appreciation for the team.
Former cricketer Shahid Afridi also appreciated the team and wished the team for the tournament and the World Cup.
