Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said that the elitist mindset has harmed Pakistan over the years, alleging that the government and decision-makers in the past only focused on the elites.

“Our governments [in the past] never thought about expatriates and low-salaried workers. Such people always wanted to have a home for their families,” he said while addressing the ‘Mera Pakistan Mera Ghar’ housing finance ceremony in Islamabad.

He termed the event as a “big moment” for the country, saying that the country should have started such an initiative much earlier.

“Elitist mindset harmed us a lot because we never had an inclusive government. It affected our country,” he said, adding that such an approach also led to two different education systems in the country.

He stressed that the country should have home financing schemes for people from lower income groups just like in the West. Furthermore, the premier added that the PTI-led government had revamped the banking system which did not accommodate the common people earlier.

The premier announced that the government would provide further subsidies as the economy gets more stable. He lauded commercial banks for changing their system to facilitate those seeking home loans and urged them to further market it.

He was of the view that the house financing scheme would provide further impetus to the construction sector, stimulating the economy.
