The forest department in India's Maharastra state has caged two monkeys who were accused of killing at least 250 dogs by throwing them off from tall buildings and trees, reported Newsweek.

The monkeys started the rampage after some of the dogs allegedly killed an infant monkey, according to the report.

The monkeys, reportedly, snatched puppies as they would walk towards them and then took them to significant heights to throw them off.

The villagers from Lavool said there were no puppies left in the village, because they were either left on heights where they would die from hunger, falling off or even being thrown off.

According to the villagers, the dog population in the area was severely affected, with their numbers declining to almost nonexistent.

“In the last two to three months, there have been incidents where the langurs roaming in the area would catch puppies and take them to a place with considerable height to throw them from there. At least 250 dogs have been killed so far,” a villager from Lavool said according to The Guardian report.

However, a district office official said there was no evidence that the monkeys acted in revenge.

According to local media, the forest department confirmed that the two monkeys primarily responsible were captured and that they will be released in a forest nearby.
