Paramilitary force manhandles photojournalist, trash equipment in Karachi
Faysal Mujeeb, a photographer with a local English daily, was forcibly removed from his place of duty and thrashed by the Rangers while he was covering a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) event in Azizabad on Thursday evening.
The event Yaadgar-i-Shuhada was held near ‘Nine Zero’, as a part of which people were coming to lay wreaths on symbolic graves.
According to details, Mujeeb was performing his duties as a photographer, when the crowd started chanting slogans in favour of Altaf Hussain. This prompted the Rangers’ personnel to start detaining people at the venue. Mujeeb and another journalist Mehboob Ahmed Chishti were also picked up during the commotion.
Mujeeb's camera and mobile phone were also destroyed in the tussle, while the two men were not released despite showing their credentials, and were detained for almost an hour.
The journalistic fraternity has condemned the incident and demanded that action be taken against the personnel responsible for the incident under the journalists’ protection laws.
