Karachi Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a police officer for shooting to death teenager Arsalan Khan in Orangi Town’s area Poney Paanch.

The incident, which took place on Monday evening, has been condemned by many people on social media who urged the authorities to take action against the officials involved in the incident. A large number of friends and relatives also reached the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital on Monday night where the body was taken. It prompted DIG West Nasir Aftab to also reach the hospital.

Arsalan's father rejected earlier claims by the police that the boy and his friend fled when asked to stop by police and fired at them.

The family of the deceased college student claim no weapon was recovered from Arsalan’s possession and police killed him in a “fake encounter”. They added that Arsalan had gone to a coaching centre with his friend identified as Yasir and upon their return, the police opened fire at them.

In a few videos circulating on social media, Arsalan's father urges people to reach the police station to demand justice. He accused Orangi Town police of the murder.

An FIR, a copy of which is available with Aaj Digital, a police encounter has been registered against the Orangi Town SHO, in-custody police officer Tauheen, and his friend Umair at the Orangi Police Station on the complaint of deceased’s uncle Badshah Khan.

The FIR has been registered under sections 34 (common intention), 109 (punishment of abetment if the act abetted committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment), 302 (murder), 324 (attempt to murder) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The DIG West has rejected the police’s initial statement.

“A three-member committee comprising SSP central, SSP investigation central, and SP Gulberg has been formed to investigate to investigate the purported [police] encounter,” DIG West Nasir Aftab told reporters outside the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

He added that the preliminary inquiry was under way and the inquiry committee would submit their findings within 24 hours. Aftab said the police won’t hesitate from taking an action against the people found to be probe under inquiry.

Moreover, police has sent the suspected gun for forensic test to determine who it belonged to. According to the in-custody police officer, the gun belonged to the victim. They added that no one shot on the arrested police officer.

They said that SHO Azam Gopang was being interrogated and if he refuses to cooperate it would result in his lawful apprehension. It is pertinent to mention that the FIR against the SHO has been registered under section 109.

Meanwhile, Arsalan's funeral prayers were offered on Tuesday in Karachi after Asr prayers.
