Curriculum in educational institutions must nurture students’ mindset in line with the Islamic code of life and ethic, said Special Assistant to Prime Minister for Political Communication Shahbaz Gill according to Dawn.

Addressing the annual convocation of Minhaj University, he said misconceptions about Islam needed to be rectified.

"The society is in dire need of character building in accordance with teachings of Islam that would definitely promote peace, love, tolerance and fraternity in the society," said the prime minister's aide adding unfortunately, some elements achieved their personal interests in the name of religion while some committed corruption in the name of secularism. "This produces nothing but hatred and disparity in the society."

The SAPM mentioned that Prime Minister Imran Khan has constituted Rehmatul-lil-Alamin Authority with a purpose to explain the basic teachings of Islam, Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and how he had trained his companions for leadership. "The government is involving Islamic scholars from the world to oversee the syllabus being taught to students in educational institutions," said Gill.

Referring to the Sialkot incident, Gill said everyone was ashamed on it and effective steps were inevitable to discourage and eliminate "intolerance".

Response to his comments were swift on social media with several users saying they felt hopeless the government will be able to tackle extremism in the country.

Some asked what role did scholars have in matter of education.

While another lamented the government's misplaced priorities.
