Planning Minister Asad Umar on Sunday said that Prime Minister Imran Khan would inaugurate the long-delayed Green Line BRT service in Karachi on December 10 -- the mass transit system is supposed to facilitate the travel of approximately 300,000 passengers daily.

The planning minister announced the development in a tweet.

Karachi’s Green Line BRT project with intersections is 24kms long that includes 12.7km elevated, 10.9kms at grade, and 422 metres underground, and has 25 stations. The phase-II common corridor from Gurumandir up to Municipal Park with a length of 2.5km has two underpasses at MA Jinnah Road.

Umar's announcement is followed by his November 28 tweet. He had announced that the commercial operation of Karachi’s Green Line bus project would begin on December 25.

Earlier this year the first consignment of 40 Green Line BRT buses arrived from China. Then in November, the second and final consignment of 40 buses for the project arrived in the city, raising the number of buses to 80.

The Green Line project, which was in February 2016 by the then PML-N government, was scheduled to complete within a year at around Rs16.85 billion and was funded by the federal government. However, it took more than five years to complete and cost Rs35 billion to finish.
