Planning Minister Asad Umar on Sunday said the commercial operation of Karachi’s Green Line bus project will begin on December 25 – a mass transit system that is supposed to facilitate the travel of approximately 300,000 passengers daily.

In a tweet, Umar said that the project would be ready for trial operation within the next 10 days. After that, he added Prime Minister Imran Khan would come to Karachi and inaugurate the project.

“Yesterday Karachi Green Line project was reviewed in detail. Inshallah this project will be ready for trial operation in next ten days. After that the Prime Minister Imran Khan will come to Karachi and inaugurate the project. After a trial operation of about two weeks, the commercial operation will be launched on December 25, God willing,” he said.

Last month, the second and final consignment of 40 buses for the Green Line project arrived in the city, raising the number of buses to 80.

Karachi’s Green Line BRT project with intersections is 24kms long that includes 12.7km elevated, 10.9kms at grade, and 422 metres underground, and has 25 stations. The phase-II common corridor from Gurumandir up to Municipal Park with a length of 2.5km has two underpasses at MA Jinnah Road.
