It has been proposed that the land system would be with the provincial government under the draft amendment to the new LG system in Sindh, sources said on Friday.

According to the sources, it was also proposed to divide the metropolitan city into 20-25 towns under the draft amendment bill.

As per the new bill, the land system would be with the provincial government while the garbage and sewerage system would be under the control of mayor. The sources said under the new bill the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board would be under the supervision of the mayor.

In the proposed law, master plan, town planning, solid waste management would also be under the elected local government.

Moreover, the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital – one of the largest hospitals of the metropolitan city – is proposed to be given under the control of the provincial government.

Apart from this, there is also a proposal to take back schools, hospitals, dispensaries, maternity and child care centres from local bodies. In addition to this, a proposal to restore the system of the local government of former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf era is also under consideration.

“There is also a proposal to end seven DMCs of Karachi,” they added.

It is pertinent to mention that the Election Commission of Pakistan has given the Sindh government a deadline till December 1 to provide statistics and local body law for delimitation of constituencies.
