Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie has criticized the Gulf countries which have pulled her new film Eternals for the depiction of a same sex couple in the Marvels movie.

In her interview to an Australian outlet on Friday, Jolie said she was "sad for those audiences" who wouldn't be able to watch the film, adding that she was "proud of Marvel for refusing to cut the scenes out."

She also called the decision not to screen "ïgnorant."

“I still don’t understand how we live in a world today where there’s still [people who] would not see the family Phastos has and the beauty of that relationship and that love,"she said during the roundtable discussion reported by the Australian outlet News.com.

“How anybody is angry about it, threatened by it, doesn’t approve or appreciate it is ignorant," said the Oscar winning actor.

The Hollywood Reported wrote on Thursday that the film would not be shown in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait after Disney did not accept the requests to edit some portions of the film out.

Deadline also reported on Thursday that the film has been banned in Bahrain and Oman. The film is however screening across the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Jordan. It will not feature any scenes of intimacy as is the norm there.

In one scene from the new Marvel movie, the character, Phastos (played by Brian Tyree Henry), and his on-screen husband, Ben (Haaz Sleiman), share a kiss.

However, Deadline reported that this scene may not be the only reason for the film not being shown, writing: "overall these markets have historically had a problem with the depiction of gods and prophets, something they consider blasphemous."

As THR reported, homosexuality is still officially illegal across the GCC and films containing anything related to LGBTQ issues are frequently not shown. Last year, the Pixar title Onward was banned across Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia over a single line referencing a lesbian relationship, they wrote.
