LAHORE: Government on Tuesday has decided to release more than 2000 workers of banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) who were detained during the violent protests by the outfit.

The decision came two days after the government signed an agreement with the TLP to end weeks of violent clashes.

Earlier in the day, according to the Punjab Interior Department, 860 TLP activists who were not named in any case were allowed to walk free.

According to the police officials the supporters who were booked in cases will be released by the courts after completing legal formalities.

The government also decided to withdraw a review appeal filed by the Punjab government in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against its order for the release of TLP chief Saad Rizvi.

The settlement came after seven police officers were killed and hundreds more were wounded as they confronted thousands of TLP demonstrators marching up to the capital Islamabad from Lahore.

A day earlier, PM Imran Khan also chaired a meeting of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) core committee. During the meeting, the premier took the core committee members into confidence over talks with the banned outfit.

Imran Khan said that talks with the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) was the only solution to the problem as he does not want bloodshed in the country at any cost.

“I never support use of power and chaos because no one can get benefit from the lawlessness. We have tried to resolve the current situation amicably. Negotiations were the only solution to the problem,” PM Khan said while talking to the participants.
