Pemra bars media from covering activities of proscribed TLP
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Thursday barred television channels and all other media outlets from covering any activity of the proscribed Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), according to a notification issued by the regulator.
It referred to the Ministry of Interior's letter dated April 15, 2021 wherein the government has declared the TLP a proscribed organization "for being engaged in act of terrorism, acting in a manner prejudicial to the peace and security of the country".
According to the notification, clause 3 (3) of Electronic Media Code of Conduct, 2015 prohibts media coverage of "proscribed organizations".
The notification reiterated that the programmes shall confirm law of the country under 18(h) Pemra Regulation, 2012 and Clause 16 of Electronic Media Code of Conduct, 2015.
"Exercising powers conferred under Section 27 of Pemra Ordinance 2002 all satellite TV channels, FM radio stations and distributive service networks (cabl;e TV operators, IPTV) are directed to stop the media coverage of the proscribed organization TLP," read the notification.
It is pertinent to mention that the TLP protest has entered in the second week as the party's workers and activists march towards Islamabad seeking their demands to be approved by the government.
The Ministry of Interior has deployed Rangers in Punjab for 60 days to maintain law and order in the country as at least five police officials were killed and hundred others sustained injuries in clashes between the security officials and the demonstrators.
